Why marital conflict
should be settled quickly.
Most couples will face conflicts. I have never met a couple
who has never quarreled. Perhaps I have not bumped into the perfect couple yet.
The Bible assumes that we will get angry. It states
matter-of-factly that we will get angry. But it warns us not to let anger persist.
“And don’t sin by letting anger control you. Don’t let the sun go down while
you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil” (Ephesians 4:26-27).
And couples – no matter how lovey dovey – are not spared. Whenever
we get angry with our spouses, we should quickly learn to forgive and settle
the conflict.
Understanding the underlying dynamics behind these two
factors – personal differences and external forces – is
often the first step towards conflict resolution:
Life is short. So we need to love, cherish and make up
quickly. Unresolved anger will fill us with regret should
our loved ones pass away before us.
There is another reason for settling marital conflict
quickly. Anger is detrimental to our own bodies.
