The picture of an athlete running in a race is replete with
meaning.
At the physical level, it reminds us of the tremendous
benefits of running or walking.
Spiritually, it likens the Christian life to a marathon
race.
“For, while physical training is of some value, godliness is
valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life
to come” (1Timothy 4:8).
Even so, we must not neglect the care and maintenance of our “temple”, for our body is the only one we have got – to effectively serve God and live life to the
fullest
(1 Corinthians 6:19).
The danger is falling into extremes. We can be health freaks
and neglect the spiritual. Or we can be "superspiritual" and neglect
our bodies, thinking God will look after the body for us while we serve Him.
Relatively speaking, physical training is less important
compared to training in godliness. However, the former is still important.
