AUTOCRUISE THEOLOGY

Some believe that once they are saved, everything is on autocruise. 

Riding on the wave of the once saved, always saved  * (OSAS) premise, adherents of “autocruise theology” reckon that since everything rests on God’s grace and mercy, they can kick back and take it easy.

They highlight Ephesians 2:8-9 but forget the following verse, vs.10.

They highlight Philippians 2:13 but forget the earlier verse, vs.12.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:8-10).

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:12-13).

                                   Are you cruising along the OSAS wave?

Is the Christian life meant to be a passive experience of faith?                                                              

What about the challenge of radical discipleship so central to Christ’s teaching? “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). What about producing fruits that befits repentance so as not to be cut off (Matthew 3:8, 10 and 7:19)?

CRUISING IN COMFORT

Autocruise, also called cruise control, is a system which automatically controls the speed of a vehicle. Taking over the throttle of the car, it is a convenient way of setting a steady speed when we travel on a highway for prolonged periods. This improves the level of comfort experienced by the driver in steady traffic conditions. But it is not so useful in the city where the traffic is likely to be congested.

Similarly, we just sit back and relax while holidaying on a cruise ship while everything is planned for our comfort and convenience.

In both instances above, we enjoy cruising in comfort without having to do much.
